Cambodia Day 9 - Last day

"We can’t believe our adventure is coming to a close and we will be boarding a plane tomorrow for home. This has been a trip of a lifetime. What a profound experience to travel Cambodia and experience the people, their history, culture, hopes and dreams. We all truly appreciated our tour guide Lim, who opened up his heart to us in sharing his life stories and ruminations about the present and future of Cambodia.

"We spent our last day doing a bit …

Cambodia Day 8: Ziplining!

"Hello from the treetops!"

"Ziplining was on our morning agenda. It was so cool! We wove our way through a series of 14 ziplines and a few skybridges in the jungle. We even got to see family of gibbons in the trees nearby. We were very lucky that the weather was perfect—not too hot, and we finished before lunchtime. Shout out to Ken S.: we missed you on this ABLE-esque excursion.

"Afternoon: yesterday in the blog we left out that we had one last …

Cambodia Day 7: Angkor Thom and Ta Prohm

"Our temple destinations today, the last of our trip, included Angkor Thom and Ta Prohm. Angkor Thom, the last capital city of the Angkor Empire. Ta Prohm is unique because, rather than being restored, it has been left in the condition in which it was “found” by the French in the 19th Century, with the jungle growing in and around it. The famous reference point: the movie Tomb Raider was shot here. Rose and Luke picked up some traditional …

Cambodia Day 6: Angkor Wat

"Wow, what a day! We began our adventure by visiting Angkor Wat, one of the most amazing architectural feats in history. This massive 12th century originally Hindu temple complex is made out of sandstone that was carried from 50 km away. It has endless intricate carvings, including stories from the Hindu Mahabharata and Ramayana. This is definitely a trip that no short description can do justice, and we will be headed back to the temple complex …

Cambodia day 5: Visit to CPCS

Our blogger, David Calamaro had this to share about the group's adventures on Day 5:

"Happy New Year, everyone! Today we started off 2020 appropriately with the testimony of Peace on our minds. We visited the Centre for Peace and Conflict Studies (CPCS) near Battambang, where we continued broadening our understanding of the later 20th century conflicts that Cambodia has faced, but with a focus on peace efforts and hope for continued rebuilding of …

New Year's Eve in Cambodia

David Calamaro shared the following update from Cambodia today:

"We spent much of the day driving from Phnom Penh to Battambang, the second largest city in Cambodia. On the way we stopped by a roadside eatery for some noodles, fried rice, and delicious stir-fried Morning Glory. We made sure to dodge the 50 or so crocodiles being kept by the owner for eventual transport to China, where (apparently) crocodile soup is a hit. When driving through the …

Cambodia Day 3 - Visits to Tuol Sleng Museum and Tuol Ampil School

David Calamaro shared the following recap of Day 3 of the Cambodia trip:

"Today began with a very sobering but impactful trip to the Tuol Sleng Museum, which was formerly a high school until the Khmer Rouge overtook it in 1975 and turned it into an interrogation and torture facility. While at the museum, we learned in detail about the Cambodian Genocide from Lim, our guide while in Phnom Penh. Lim’s life story includes being conscripted by the …

Cambodia Day 2 - Touring the Royal Palace, Silver Pagoda & National Museum

Day 2 in Cambodia began with a delicious "breakfast with a view" at the hotel.

After breakfast, the group enjoyed a fabulous trip to the the Royal Palace and Silver Pagoda, each in their own “cyclo,” or bike taxi.

The Royal Palace is the home of the Cambodian King Norodom Sihamono. They toured the grounds and visited the Silver Palace, which is floored completely in 6 tons of silver tiles. There, they viewed the Emerald Buddha and also a life-…

The Dragons Have Landed in Cambodia

After two days of travel (they left DV at 6:00 pm on 12/26 and arrived 12:15 pm local time in Cambodia on 12/28), our group of upper school students with David and Allison arrived in Cambodia -- tired but safe and excited for their first day. David Calamaro shared photos and the following update:

We had our first meal in Cambodia at a restaurant where the curry chicken was a big hit. We then visited a Buddhist temple on top of the only hill in …
