Between You & Me

The 2019 DVFS original musical Between You & Me, directed by DV alumnus Khalil Munir '01, opened on Thursday, April 11th to rave reviews. The show ran for three nights – each to a packed audience. Jillian Pressman '20, Julide Emresoy, '24 and Nick Fabricatore '24 led the large ensemble cast, with strong supporting leads Maurice DeLoach '21 and Adriana DiPlacido '23. Every member of the cast had their moments to shine. Ethan Gallo '22 channeled anchorman Ron Burgundy in the opening scene, and, along with reporters Julia Campbell '22 and Josh Surratt '22, conveyed the danger of the violent storm that raged outside of the fictional Oklahoma City High School where the play was set. Josh and Ethan later played Maurice's pals and fellow bullies. Fiona Cunniffe '23, Annie Richards '25, Asha Campbell '23, and Sydney Pegg '25 hilariously demonstrated how rumors can get out of hand during the Rumor Has It sequence, and were later joined by Julia Campbell and Sophie Lyczak '23 in a rendition of Martha and the Vandellas' Nowhere to Run. Imani Murray '19 and Jay Griffiths '22 treated the audience to a Sonny & Cher flashback singing I Got You Babe, and Theo Cutrara '21 delivered a powerful performance as Jillian's dad singing Yesterday by The Beatles. Dancers Joelle Hacik '22 and Graham Richards '22 added nuance and helped bring the story to life in each of their scenes. And, who could forget Tess Sweitzer '25 as outraged chemistry teacher Mrs. Wolfgang? (Ooh, somebody's in trouble!)

Audience members were moved by the story of the musical – written by the DVFS Drama Club with lead writers Naomi Wattles '19, Natalie Cherna '19 and Liam Sinclair '19 – which centered around misconceptions and misunderstandings in a high school community. While hiding in a closet at the school during a terrible storm, the three leads share their stories and discover that each has been dealing with more than anyone knew. They find common ground and forge new friendships, leading Jillian's character, Bailey, to comment in the show's final monologue, "maybe we should all spend some time together in a closet."

Between You & Me was propelled by strong musical performances supported by a very talented student Pit Band which included Liam Swiggard '19, Kyle Simkins '19, Maya Taylor '20, Priya Wells '20, Danny Gallagher '20, Jamie Barton '21, Davis Payton '22, Taite Daniels '22, Theo Penders '24, Evan Stockmal '24, and led by DVFS music teacher Tim Simmons. Highlights included an original song written by DV students that opened the show and introduced the storm, Maurice's performance of Mama Said Knock You Out accompanied by trashcan drummers in the aisles, Nick Fabricatore's and Adriana DiPlacido's sweet renditions of I Can Tell That We Are Gonna Be Friends and Stand By You, Jillian Pressman's powerful performance of Carrie Underwood's Blown Away, and a strong finish with final song Between Me & You by Brandon Flowers (which was suggested by Julide Emresoy).

Special thanks to senior Julian Mato-Hernandez who set up and ran the new sound board for the show, and to the wonderful stage crew, that was led by crew chief Lucas Boehnke '22, and included Calder Johnson '22, Elise Stockmal '20, Hailey Binford '19, and 4th graders Noah Pacera and Nick Baggio.

This is DV's fourth original production, and the young cast, band and crew suggest a strong future for the program.
