DVFS welcomed the newest member of our faculty on December 5th. Lucy is a 6 month old labradoodle who has been trained as a therapy dog by Ultimate Canine located in Indiana. We chose Ultimate Canine for its thorough and intensive training program which exceeds the AKC (American Kennel Club) requirements.
Lucy is a member of the school's counseling department, and her primary duty is to offer comfort and snuggles to students. She is also a wonderful listener and is available for reading time. Lucy is happy to participate in appropriate classroom activities. And we know she will provide joy to all! (pictured above: Lucy and Lower & Middle School Counselor Christy Zawadzkas visited Carole Chilton's class in Middle School. She posed for the eager "puparazzi", showed off some of her training, and then settled down for some belly rubs.)
Lucy was introduced to the community at Gathering on December 5th, and while the students were very excited to welcome her, they demonstrated great kindness and consideration in not overwhelming Lucy as she gets used to her new surroundings. She spent the first couple of days in training with her four handlers: Beth Gray, Christy Zawadzkas, Jason Seggern and Nic James. All of our students have been great about asking permission to pet and interact with her while she is wearing her working harness -- and her handlers are very grateful. When not at school, Lucy will be part of Beth Gray's family, and also spend time at Christy's house. Special thanks to a generous donor who helped bring Lucy to our DV family!.
