Upper School Director

Delaware Valley Friends School seeks outstanding candidates for the opening of Upper School Director, to begin August 2019. This is a new, 12-month position reporting to the Head of School resulting from the reorganization of duties. Ideal candidates will have a deep understanding of and experience serving students who learn differently. Candidates should also have a demonstrated commitment to serving students from diverse backgrounds and have engaged in training in cultural awareness. Previous experience in Friends schools is preferred. Candidates with diverse backgrounds are strongly encouraged to apply.


  • Serves as the educational leader of the upper school division
  • Guides upper school faculty in matters of classroom management, pedagogy, and school procedures.
  • Supports upper school students in all aspects of their academic program, in consultation with the Associate Head of School and Academic Dean
  • Oversees student affairs in the upper school division, in partnership with the Dean of Students
  • Liaises with upper school parents and with students’ therapists as appropriate
  • Collaborates with the Associate Head of School and Academic Dean on the development of upper school academic offerings and the schedule
  • Acts as the primary evaluator of division faculty in partnership with the associate head and other academic administrators
  • Makes recommendations to hire and, when necessary, terminate faculty, and plays a leadership role in such processes
  • Works in conjunction with the associate head and other division leaders to orient new teachers and other staff to the school
  • Clerks upper school division meetings
  • Serves on the Admissions Committee
  • Serves on the Academic Leadership Committee
  • In consultation with the CFO, maintains and helps establish budgets related to division work
  • Continually engages with students, parents, and other constituencies through events and programs of the school, developing and leading such events when appropriate
  • Engages in ongoing professional development relevant to the position
  • Other duties as assigned by the Head of School
  • Supports the School and its mission, maintaining a high degree of professionalism at all times


  • Bachelor’s degree required; master’s degree in a relevant discipline is preferred
  • At least 5-7 years working in a school environment, including significant time as a classroom teacher; previous administrative and managerial experience is preferred
  • Deep understanding of students who learn differently and the ability to support faculty in meeting each student’s needs
  • Orton-Gillingham or IMSLEC certification preferred
  • High demonstrated emotional intelligence and the ability to be both a leader and collaborator
  • Exhibit a growth-oriented mindset; flexibility; a high degree of interpersonal competence
  • A strong draw to serving an institution with the mission of Friends education
  • Demonstrated commitment to supporting work in diversity, equity, and inclusion
  • Facility with technology
