Cambodia Day 8: Ziplining!

"Hello from the treetops!"

"Ziplining was on our morning agenda. It was so cool! We wove our way through a series of 14 ziplines and a few skybridges in the jungle. We even got to see family of gibbons in the trees nearby. We were very lucky that the weather was perfect—not too hot, and we finished before lunchtime. Shout out to Ken S.: we missed you on this ABLE-esque excursion.

"Afternoon: yesterday in the blog we left out that we had one last temple to visit near Siem Reap: Banteay Srei. What makes this temple unique is that it is built from red sandstone and is quite beautiful in the light. Also, the sandstone itself is harder which allowed for even more intricate carvings than we saw at Angkor Wat. The name of the temple, dedicated to the Hindu God Shiva, means “citadel of beauty” and it lived up to its name.

"After a couple hours downtime, we had dinner next to the hotel and then headed to the Phare: the Cambodian circus. From the website:

'The Phare Ponleu Selpak vocational training center in Battambang was formed in 1994 by 9 young men coming home from a refugee camp after the Khmer Rouge regime. They were greatly helped during that time by an art teacher using drawing classes as therapy and wanted to share this new skill among the poor, socially deprived and troubled youngsters in Battambang. They founded an art school and public school followed to offer free education. A music school and theatre school were next and finally, for the kids who wanted more, the circus school. Today more than 1,200 pupils attend the public school daily and 500 attend the alternative schools.'

"What a performance! Dance, acrobatics, rocking music, and humor all telling the story of young folks in Cambodia looking for love and trying to make ends meet, set in a bar called Metal. We have covered an amazing amount of historical and cultural ground on our journey."
