Matt Azarva
, Class of 1999
Matt entered DVFS as a 7th grader at the
Harcum College location. During his senior year he had a life-changing
experience when he spent his internship at WB-17 in Philadelphia.
Following this experience, Matt opted to major in Communications Media
Studies at Northeastern University in Boston, graduating a semester
early from this five-year co-op work study institution. Matt started his
co-op at Boston’s WB-56, two years later being hired as a freelance
sports producer for the Ten O’Clock News. In the fall of 2002 he took a
sports broadcasting course at Northeastern, taught by Joe Castiglione,
the voice of the Boston Red Sox.
At the end of the course, Joe offered
Matt the position of statistician, putting him in the broadcasting booth
for all 81 home games and some heartbreaking post-season games – a
truly unbelievable experience.Matt is currently a sports
producer at Comcast SportsNet in Philadelphia. In September 2010 he had
the honor of winning his first Emmy for “Regularly Scheduled Daily
Program or Sportscast”. Matt credits the “talented and supportive”
teaching staff at DVFS for his transformation. Being exposed to the
television industry at such a young age definitely helped him focus in
on choosing his major at Northeastern University and ultimately his
career. Matt was presented with the Alumnus of the Year Award in October
2003, and as he said in his acceptance speech: “For me, and I suspect
many others, Delaware Valley Friends is not an ending, but a beginning.”You can find Matt’s impressive resume at: www.linkedin.com/pub/matthew-azarva/1a/634/4bb
