Overview

Several of our most important teaching moments occur outside of the traditional classroom setting.

Students at Delaware Valley Friends participate in:

  • Adventure Learning Experiences (ABLE) – a program that many students find life-changing. In middle school, students are introduced to the program during orientation with team building and orienteering exercises.  In upper school, it includes overnight trips, sailing the Florida Keys, hiking Inca trails in Peru, bike touring in Maryland, or rock climbing in Pennsylvania.
  • Athletics – we have an active, competitive athletics program. Interscholastic sports begin in middle school and continue through the varsity level. Approximately 80% of students at DVFS participate in at least one team sport and many do more.
  • Clubs and Activities – we have a wide variety of clubs and after-school activities to encourage students to join together around a common interest or socialize in a safe, supervised setting.  Student interests and initiative drives these opportunities, and student committees manage and schedule the logistics in concert with faculty advisors and school administration.
  • A Community of Friends - students form close connections with peers and faculty in our warm, supportive community based on Quaker values. Students feel a sense of belonging and are treated with respect. Leadership is encouraged in ways large and small, but particularly within our Quaker-based student government where student-led committees work collaboratively to organize student life at DVFS.
  • Service Learning – stewardship and paying back to the community are two central values within the Quaker tradition. Our service learning program provides opportunities for students to reach out – both within our own community and particularly beyond our walls – to help others in need.
  • Project Eye-to-Eye – DVFS students serve as mentors for area elementary school students who have similar learning challenges. They work together on art projects, play games, but mostly just spend time getting to know one another.

Delaware Valley Friends School is for students with dyslexia, dysgraphia and other language-based learning disabilities as well as ADD/ADHD.
