The Arts

The Arts have always been a strength at Delaware Valley Friends

Breadth
Our students explore painting, printmaking, sculpture, and ceramics. They discover video production and animation in our multimedia studio. They learn musical theory and instrumental and vocal skills. They take part in an excellent culinary arts program. And they pursue options ranging from our Improv Acting ensemble to Drum Circle, to everyanything, our national award-winning literary magazine.

Quality
Delaware Valley Friends has sent many graduates on to top art schools—and to successful creative careers, whether as fine artists or graphic designers, musicians, chefs, or teachers. Visit our student gallery to see some representative samples of recent student work.

Purpose
We use the process of art making to teach creative problem solving and to prepare students to meet academic and life challenges. Both rigorous and fun, the arts program balances the academic experience, offering the chance to develop other forms of talent and intelligence.

Program
Middle School students have art the entire school year.  Upper school students are offered the following opportunities:

  • Drawing & Painting
  • Culinary Arts
  • Sculpture & Ceramics
  • Multi-Media
  • Music
  • Improvisation Acting
  • Animation
In addition to the many electives offered, ninth grade students take a semester-long class in two-dimensional design, in which they learn the basics of observational drawing, and the foundations of color theory. Junior and Senior Studio Art are offered to students planning to study the arts in college. The faculty works closely with each student to prepare a comprehensive portfolio.

Each spring, a school wide Arts Festival showcases the many talents of our students.
